A Dream Becomes a Reality

After serving for 23 years in the crisis pregnancy ministry, I have observed a common wound which caused suffering among the women I served.  That wound was the result of an absence of parental example in their lives.  Their parents were in prison, on drugs, abusive or totally absent from the family.

MOM Center was born from the idea of bringing systemic change to women and famillies of Fredericksburg by starting from the gound up, healing wounds while educating and teaching foundations for buiding strong families.  We chose as our tool to accomplish this goal, an incentive based educational system called Earn While You Learn.  EWYL is used in over 1,000 pregnancy centers across the United States, and has a proven track record for producing habit altering change.

A client listens with an advocate to a DVD lesson.  This is followed by discussion, and further reinforced with a homework sheet.  When the client brings back the completed lesson, she is then issued MOM money, which can be used to purchase things in our incentive store.  This incentive keeps the client interested in coming back to take more classes and earn more items.  If the client chose to take every class available, it would take approximately four years to to cover all available topics.  Spending extended time with the client allows us to achieve lasting change in behaviors and attitudes.

Some of our networking partners are:
  • St. Vincent de Paul Society
  • Community Needs Council
  • Good Samaritan Center
  • Hill Country Cares
  • Hill Country Memorial Hospital WIC
  • Hill Country Memorial Hospital lactation nurses
Licensed counselors and social workers, nurses, attorneys and other professional women have voluteered to lead support groups, teach finance classes, nutrition classes and be breastfeeding advocates.  Our list of volunteers is growing.  If you have a skill you think might benefit the women we serve, we would love to talk to you about becoming a part of our family.

We have based our ministry on the belief that the traditional family is the nucleus of society and must be helped and defended by those of us who have the ability to do so.

Thank you for joining with us in our mission to heal wounds and strengthen famiies in Fredericksburg.
